Health authorities in Croatia ordered soft drink company Coca-Cola on Wednesday to remove some of its drinks from its shelves. Cases of poisoning were reported in three cities.
The Croatian Food Inspection Authority temporarily banned the company from distributing certain products, the Croatian Inspection Authority said in a statement. Samples of different drinks distributed by Coca-Cola Croatia are examined. The first results should be there soon.
The inspection did not clarify what products would be recalled, but Coca-Cola itself confirmed that the matter was related to cola and carbonated water. The company confirms that internal analyzes did not reveal any violations.
In Rijeka, a 19-year-old ended up in hospital after having a drink in a cafe. His condition is “stable”, but he is said to have suffered serious injuries.
According to Croatian Health Minister Vili Beros, several other cases of poisoning were reported in Zagreb and Varaždin. In two patients there was a “direct association” with drink consumption.
Tap water
The minister warned against “false messages” on social media about poisoning cases. However, he called for “some vigilance” and asked to drink tap water.
