It’s easy to change the PS5’s detachable drive

There was some concern last month when it turned out that installing a detachable disc reader into the redesigned PlayStation 5 required an internet connection. Obviously, the device just needs to go through a security check, because even installed disk readers can easily swap controllers.

Several users on YouTube have posted videos of themselves installing a pre-paired drive on their new PlayStation 5. The console can easily register the new drive via an Internet connection. Once the registration is complete, it works without any issues, even while playing offline.

Note that the drive will refuse to read Blu-ray discs if you install the device offline. Since online recording is not performed, the PlayStation 5 will not recognize the disc reader.

The fact that disk readers can simply be replaced alleviates the worry. For example, it was originally thought that the detachable drives wouldn’t work with other consoles after they were connected to the first PlayStation 5. However, controllers treat the hardware like a controller: once plugged in, it works without any problems.

The question is whether the process will continue to work if Sony’s servers go offline. However, by then, the publisher will likely have released a patch that makes the initial security check unnecessary.
