Finally the Champions League again. The best teams from Europe will face each other again in the coming months. And it’s all as it was before: in the whirlpool stadiums with the audience. Which club can lift the trophy with big ears in the air on May 28, 2022 at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg? Overview of the group matches on Tuesday evening.
Group E: Barcelona – Bayern Munich 0-3
For Barcelona, the first European match without Messi was not a gift: immediately against Bayern Munich, the team that lost 2-8 a good year ago. Back then, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, boys like Memphis Depay and Luke de Jong now have to take care of the Camp Nou goals.
Soon the difference between the two teams became clear. After just half an hour, Muller was lucky to score the opening goal, and in the second half Robert Lewandowski quickly doubled the score. Five minutes before the end, Lewandowski completely closed the books: 0-3.

Group E: Dynamo Kiev – Benfica 0-0
Jan Vertonghen sided with Benfica to move away to Ukraine. Another (old) acquaintance of Benfica: Roman Yarmashuk. A little before the hour, the former striker of the AA Gent club scored the first goal on his shoe, but could not pass the ball past the Ukrainian goalkeeper from close range.
In injury time, Vertonghen and his teammates almost covered their nose. Fortunately, the Red Devil, Shabarenko’s goal was disallowed for offside.
Groep F: Young Boys Burn – Manchester United 2-1
After barely thirteen minutes playing at the Swiss stadium Young Boys Berne, Ronaldo has already scored his goal. The Portuguese hit a superb cross pass from his compatriot Bruno Fernandes into the far corner. The Young Boys goalkeeper still hit the ball, but he couldn’t stop it from getting in.
This was Ronaldo’s 135th goal in the Champions League. This makes him the most solid all-time top scorer in championship ball. Ronaldo scored his first goal in the Champions League with Manchester United on Tuesday since May 5, 2009. The Portuguese then scored two goals in the semi-final against Arsenal:
What followed was less for Manchester United. After 35 minutes, Wan-Bissaka got red and had to Red Devils Another hour with ten more. The Swiss got into the match better and better and got the bonus after 66 minutes: Ngalameo equalized. United striker Jesse Lingard made his hand for Switzerland in the 95th minute. The Englishman played for a very short time, and Young Boys striker Siebatcheu managed to capitalize. The Swiss got what they deserved: three points against a weak Manchester United.
Group F: Villarreal – Atalanta 2-2
At first glance, it’s not the most attractive poster of the evening, but Villarreal is the Europa League winner for a reason and Atalanta were third in Serie A last season for a reason. They made the scene interesting: 1-1 in the first half, 2-2 at the end. Fifteen minutes before the end, Arnaud Danjuma (formerly Brugge) gave Villarreal the lead, and ten minutes later German Goossens equalized again.
Group G: Seville – Salzburg 1-1
The duel between Seville and Red Bull Salzburg turned into a real penalty shootout festival. In the first half, the Belarusian referee Alexei Kolpakov whistled no less than four penalty kicks: three for Salzburg and one for Seville.
Between the 13th and 37th minutes, Red Bull Salzburg received no less than three penalties. Striker Karim Adeymi was incorrectly stopped three times, three times Belarusian referee Alexei Kolpakov made the point. Adeyemi himself got it wrong at first and then left it up to Luka Suchic, who managed to score first but also failed.
In the 42nd minute, Seville’s turn came to a penalty kick. Ivan Rakitic kept his cool and put 1-1 on the scoreboard after a great first half.
In the second half, we didn’t get any penalties and we didn’t see any other goals.
Group G: Lusk Lille – Wolfsburg 0-0
A disappointment for the Belgian fans who crossed the border in Lille to watch the Lille-Wolfsburg match. At Wolfsburg, Sebastian Bornau, Aster Franks and Dodi Lucbakio started on the bench. So of the four Belgians at Wolfsburg, only Quinn Castells had a kick-off. Lille midfielder Amadou Onana also started playing on the bench.
Across the street was Jonathan David, too. The former AA Gent striker appeared to give the French national champion the lead, but the Canadian’s goal was rejected by the VAR.
In the end we saw more Belgians playing. Bornau and Lukbakio joined Wolfsburg, and Amadou Onana joined the team in Lille. Unfortunately we couldn’t see any other targets.
Group H: Chelsea – Zenit St Petersburg 1-0
He was looking forward to Romelu Lukaku’s first Champions League game at Chelsea. The opponent from Russia looked like a tougher customer than expected. Lukaku was constantly searched by fellow players, but was never found. Until the 66th minute: Azpilicueta made an excellent cross, and Big Room’s header at the far post.
Chelsea continued to push, but remained at 1-0. Lukaku pulls his team back over the line.
Group H: Malmo – Juventus 0-3
Juventus had no problem with Swedish champion Malmo. Alex Sandro, Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata put the final score 0-3 on the scoreboard in the first half. Thus, the second half is no longer more than a mandatory number.
