Ajax achieved its first away win of the season in the Eredivisie on Sunday. John Van’t Schip’s team was too strong for NEC at 1-2 and is now in 8th place.
The opening goal of the second half came from Christian Helenson, who finished off the match after good preparation work by Brian Brobbey. In the final stage, NEC pressed, but the goal fell to the other side. Carlos Forbes scored. Elis Tavsan returned the favor just before the end.
In the previous Eredivisie match, Ajax had already beaten Vitesse 5-0. The Amsterdam team is slowly but surely recovering after an exciting start to the season and now sits in eighth place.
Ajax will play the final minutes of their postponed match away to RK Waalwijk on Wednesday. The Amsterdam team leads 2-3. If this lead is maintained, they will rise to sixth place.
It was the first time this season in the Eredivisie that Ajax won away from home. This was only the second time in all competitions. In August, the Amsterdam team won 1-4 at Ludogorets Stadium.
NEC suffered its first defeat since October 1st and is slowly starting to get worried. After thirteen games, Roger Meyer’s side only have Utrecht, FC Volendam and Vitesse in the Eredivisie.
Ajax takes the lead in the second half
Three days after a 4-3 defeat to Olympique de Marseille in the Europa League, Ajax were by far the better team against NEC. Van’t Schip had special opportunities in the first half.
The visitors were dangerous through headers from Gurriel Hato and Broby. Captain Steven Bergwijn shot wide and then Brobbie came close to making it 0-1 with a header. Jasper Cillessen made a good save. He later did the same with an attempt by Steven Berghuis.
In the second half the percentages were the same, but now Ajax scored. After Kenneth Taylor had already gone close with a shot from distance, Helenson scored. Thanks to Proby, who cleared the ball after a good job.
NEC’s pressure gradually increased and the equalizer was up in the air. The space created broke the home team, with substitute Forbes taking the decision after a brilliant cross from Berghuis: 0-2. Tavsan made things interesting with a beautiful goal, but a draw was no longer possible.
