‘If America says to Israel: It will stop here, it will stop’

In the end, the U.S. decides how long Israel can withstand its onslaught, says foreign commentator Bernard Hummelberg. “At some point, President Biden will call his Egyptian counterpart Sisi and ask him to start peace talks.”

U.S. support for Israel, both diplomatically and materially, is so great that Washington ultimately has to make the final decision, Hummelberg says. ‘If America says to Israel: the attack will stop here, it will stop. Every day an American transport plane lands in Israel with equipment. The country cannot ignore that support.’

Hammelburg has already seen the first signs that America is slowly starting to turn around. “For example, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he was unhappy with Israel’s efforts to minimize civilian casualties during attacks.”

According to Hummelburg, the next step is for President Joe Biden to decide it’s time for a ceasefire and call Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. ‘Egypt is very good at negotiating files.’

No veto in the Security Council this time?
