Turkey’s technology minister announced on Thursday that Turkey’s first astronaut will be sent into space in January 2024.

Minister Mehmet Fatih Cajir said that, starting from January 9, Colonel Albert Jezeravci will participate in a space mission with Spanish, Italian and Swedish astronauts.

During the two-week AX3 mission, the Turkish astronaut will participate in 13 different scientific experiments on the International Space Station.

Turkey selected Gezeravcı, a Turkish Air Force F-16 pilot, as the country’s first potential space traveler earlier this year during the country’s major technology event Teknofest. (read more)

The state established the Turkish Space Agency TUA in 2018, and announced its space program in 2019, as well as its intention to send a manned mission into space.
