Solar Magazine – SMA wants to build a new inverter factory in the US

SMA Solar Technology to expand manufacturing to US The German manufacturer wants to open an inverter factory in the US in 2025 with an annual production capacity of 3.5 GW.

The manufacturer says it is working with several states and potential partners to evaluate 'the most strategic manufacturing location and approach'. Site selection is expected in the first half of 2024. 200 new jobs are expected to be created in the first 3 years. The company also said there are opportunities to expand production capacity over time.

Inflation Act
“The US is an important market and the Inflationary Reduction Act (IRA) offers an extraordinary opportunity for long-term growth,” said Jürgen Reinert, CEO of SMA. “With this move, we significantly strengthen our market share in the United States (US) and pave the way for SMA's future growth. Global demand for climate-friendly solar energy solutions and the urgent need for greater energy efficiency continue to grow. This is reflected in our order books and we are well positioned to benefit from this result through our wide range of solutions.

“This strategic decision will drive SMA's growth and provide solutions to a market looking for domestic products,” said Jeppe Johansson, Managing Director of SMA Americas. “We applaud the Biden administration for working with the Department of Energy and the Internal Revenue Service on their bold policies to advance clean energy production in America. The potential for our market is enormous and local manufacturing is a strategic part of our growth path.”
