Some electric cars have a built-in heat pump. This is, for example, integrated as standard into the Tesla Model Y and BMW iX3. For cars like the Audi Q4 E-tron and Volkswagen ID.4, you pay more than 1,000 euros extra for them.
High price, but it can pay off. The heat pump uses the heat that the battery gives off while driving. This is used very efficiently to heat the passenger compartment. This effect is greater in winter, because such systems work particularly well at temperatures below zero. And because you don't need to use any electricity from the battery for heating, you can drive further.
It sounds like a luxury addition to the car, but Tesla recommends making more use of the seat heaters. This will get you warm quickly, while consuming less energy than indoor heating. So you can set it to a lower temperature.
We have already learned this thanks to the energy crisis. Lowering the temperature by a few degrees can save a lot of money. This is also the case with your electric car. You will drive further if you lower your thermostat in the winter.
Charging an electric car battery produces a lot of residual heat. Instead of letting it go to waste, different models can put it to good use. In a car app, such as a Tesla or BMW app, you can set the heating to turn on at a specified time. This can be done while the car is already connected. This way you won't have to turn on the heating system while riding and you can continue driving.
