The US and UK have imposed sanctions on four Houthi officials for attacking merchant ships in the Red Sea. reports that US Treasury Department Thursday. The four were also said to be involved in taking employees hostage. The Houthis' actions threaten “peace, security and stability in Yemen”.

Sanctions have been imposed against the Houthi regime's defense minister, the commander of the Houthi naval forces, the head of the coast guard and the person responsible for purchasing weapons from Iran. The sanctions prevent Houthi men from accessing assets located on US soil. Transactions of goods and services involving the four Houthis are also prohibited.

“This joint action with the United Kingdom is a demonstration of our collective commitment to use all resources necessary to prevent these attacks,” said Brian Nelson, Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury Department.

Yemeni Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi responded in a televised address on Thursday, Reuters news agency reported. “Targeting of ships bound for Israel will continue until aid arrives for the Palestinian people in Gaza,” he said. He said the US and British action would be counterproductive and would have no impact on the “resoluteness of the Houthis”.
