TVNetflix has signed a deal with The Roald Dahl Story Company. Thus, the streaming service acquires the rights to all the books of the British writer. Netflix announced this in a statement.
The purchase will give Netflix the rights to all of the characters and stories created by Roald Dahl – including “Matilda” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in the catalog. It will use the streaming service to produce new movies and TV series, but will also be planning games, stage shows and promotions.
Netflix signed an agreement with The Roald Dahl Story Company three years ago to produce an animated series. For example, the series “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and its successor “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator” have already been planned, as well as two projects in “Matilda”. Thanks to the new deal, many new projects will undoubtedly be added.
The deal is pretty rare, because Netflix makes almost no acquisition. The streaming service typically chooses to make deals with filmmakers and producers who then deliver the content. There have been fewer than ten actual acquisitions in the past ten years, and this is without a doubt the largest ever. The amount of money in circulation was not disclosed. But the deal three years ago would have cost between $500 million (426 million euros) and $1 billion (825 million euros).
