Block workEric Gilver (23) from Werkendam has been blinking at least once a day for many years. This compulsive action arises from the recurring fear that not blinking may lead to dry or irritated eyes. Eric suffers from what is known in psychology as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

“As soon as the alarm goes off and I open my eyes, I actually start blinking,” Eric says candidly about his problems. “I used to be aware of this, for example when I had to rub my eyes while sleeping, but nowadays blinking almost always happens spontaneously. Sometimes I would blink before I felt fear. It can go very quickly. According to my psychiatrist, All those years of coercion have led to a pattern of behavior that continues unconsciously.

Although Eric has been receiving professional therapy for about five years, his therapy sessions don't seem to be paying off: “Even now, not a day goes by that I don't blink. No matter how hard I try and how conscious I am of my blinking behavior, it still happens.” Over and over again. Fortunately, I'm not the only one who has this problem, I see it when I look around. Even my psychiatrist shows up with my behavior sometimes.
