Mourners continue to flock to Navalny's grave: photos show a line half a kilometer long, the grave completely covered in flowers | Alexei Navalny dies

Pictures of the long line of people waiting show passing cars honking their horns and drivers waving to the mourners. There are almost no police and all the fences have been removed.

All day yesterday people were bringing flowers to the grave. This was also the case on Saturday. People are given only as much time as they need to place their flowers, and then they have to move on immediately.

When the cemetery closed yesterday at 5pm, not everyone wanted to leave right away. Local media reported that dozens stood at the entrance and chanted Navalny's name. They demanded that the gates be opened again and threw their flowers at the entry gate.

Mother Lyudmila Navalnaya returned to the grave on Saturday, accompanied by the widow's mother, Yulia Navalnaya. Navalny's wife did not attend the funeral. She lives abroad with her two children, and like her husband risks arrest if she returns to Russia.

Last night there were so many flowers on the grave that the wooden cross (usually about 1.7 meters high) was no longer visible. Photos show that the flowers are stacked almost to human height.

Navalny died on February 16 in a penal colony in Siberia, where he was serving a 19-year prison sentence for “extremism.” The cause of death is unclear. The authorities say that he died of natural causes, but his supporters do not believe anything and accuse President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin of murder.

Navalny was buried on Friday in southeastern Moscow. His mother was pressured to hold the funeral secretly, but she no longer agreed.

In two weeks, presidential elections will be held in Russia. If things go as planned, Putin will succeed himself. No anti-Kremlin candidate was allowed to participate.
