German local authorities ask Berlin to build more bunkers

German local authorities ask Berlin to build more bunkers

This call comes a day after statements by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. During his visit to civil protection facilities in Finland, Pistorius said Germany must also provide more protection for the civilian population.

Unlike Finland, Germany does not have bunkers for everyone, and since the end of the Cold War, the remaining state-owned facilities have been sold or fallen into disrepair.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Berlin came up with a €100 billion fund to address major shortcomings in the German military (Bundeswehr, ed.). “It is not only about enabling the German army to defend itself, but also about protecting the population from the risks associated with the war,” Andre Bergegger, head of the German Cities and Municipalities Organization, told Funke Media Group.

According to Bergiger, $1 billion annually will be needed over the next ten years to protect citizens, but this is just a starting point. Bergiger believes the money should come from the federal budget.

For example, Germany should build more bunkers, according to cities and municipalities. Of the 2,000 public shelters, only 600 remain. “There is a great need to put the dismantled bunkers back into use again,” Berger added.
