According to the Argentine newspaper La Nacion, George Gänswein has received a new appointment from Pope Francis. He will become an ambassador at a yet-to-be-disclosed location. According to sources close to Ganswein, the decision was made after his visit to the Pope on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Pope Benedict XVI at the beginning of the year. He then returned to the Vatican with the women who cared for the Pope Emeritus until his death on New Year's Eve 2022.
Last week, a book was published in which Francis speaks extensively about his relationship with his predecessor. In it, Ganswein was accused of being unfit to publish memoirs about the years he spent with the former pope immediately after his death. Regarding the conspiracies in the Vatican, the Pope also mentions in this book that you must forgive people who have done wrong and turn the page. “It's just different for people who remain stubborn.”
Gänswein, 67, has been unemployed in the Freiburg diocese since his resignation from the Vatican in the summer of 2023. He was appointed archbishop in January 2013, shortly before Benedict XVI resigned, and remained his private secretary until his death in late 2022.
