New week, new match day, new questionable decisions by refereeing and/or VAR. No: The level is not always high, in Antwerp they were very angry after the defeat against Club Brugge.
Mark van Bommel believed Antwerp should have been awarded an extra penalty against Club Brugge, and Toby Alderweireld went further and said the standard of refereeing was simply poor in a Champions League play-off.
The stage between De Cuyper and Kerk is subject to discussion
The stage that will be the subject of much ink? Maxime De Cuyper made a huge tackle on Gerano Kirk in the final minutes. All red and white saw eleven meters into it and hoped the ball would reach the point.

But it didn’t happen in the end: Antwerp did not get a second penalty kick in the match against Club Brugge. A matter of interpretation and not a clear error and not a mistake? There will certainly be another discussion about this in the coming days.
There is no penalty according to Bookout
If it was up to former referee and current analyst Alexander Bookout, the alternate referee did nothing wrong. βAt first I also thought it was a mistake, but as you can see De Kuiper plays ball too.β
In his analysis in front of the referee, Bookot said: βFor me, it is not normal for the Video Assistant Referee to intervene to issue a penalty kick whistle. At such stages, this is not what the Video Assistant Referee should do.β RTBF Sunday evening.
