Ivar Slick seriously injured after clash in United States: “It’s going well considering the circumstances”

Ivar Slik was seriously injured in a training accident in the US on Tuesday. The 30-year-old Dutchman, who had traveled to America to compete in the prestigious gravel race Unbound, crashed into a car during a practice ride. Slick was taken to hospital unconscious, but ‘under the circumstances he’s fine now.’

His training buddy Jasper O’Gellon, who is in the US for the Unbound Gravel race, revealed this on Instagram. “Yesterday our friend Ivor crashed into a car during joint practice around Betonville. He was taken unconscious to the hospital. It was revealed that he had sustained multiple injuries. A severe concussion, a broken nose, a small crack in his skull and lots of bruises, scrapes and cuts.”

“Meanwhile, he is doing well and the doctors are positive. He is conscious, talking and moving his whole body. But he will be kept in the hospital for the next few days so they can monitor him. We are very happy with all the (professional) help he is receiving and has received. Not available, he won’t be on the bike for the time being,” concludes Ogelon.

First non-American winner
Slick plans to finish the new version of Unbound in the US state of Kansas. Two years ago, the Dutchman — the first non-American — won the famous clay court tournament. 9 hours 22 minutes: Slick also achieved this with the fastest time ever run in a gravel race.

Unbound is a 300km bicycle race on unpaved roads. There are some well-known Dutch participants again this year, with Niki Terpstra, Laurens ten Dam and Thijs Zonneveld.
