Barcelona puts its fate in the hands of Hansi Flick. He will succeed German coach Xavi Hernandez at Camp Nou, and has signed a two-season contract. An eye-catching choice for some fans, because Flick caused one of the biggest insults in the club’s history 4 years ago.
So FC Barcelona worked quickly to find a successor to Xavi, who would first leave, then not, and then eventually depart as coach.
Just a few days after it was officially announced that Barcelona had parted ways with the club legend, the club has already found a new coach in Hansi Flick.
Although Xavi would have made a nice gesture upon his departure: the Spaniard is not demanding wages from Barcelona, despite the breach of contract. A gift for cash-strapped Catalans.
The 59-year-old German signed a two-season contract at Camp Nou. Flick has been unemployed since September last year, when he was dismissed from coaching the German national team.
Before coaching the German national team, Flick coached Bayern for two years. During that period, he won the German League twice and the Champions League once.
In the successful 2019-2020 season, in which the team won the treble, Bayern achieved their famous 2-8 victory over Barcelona, which remains one of the biggest humiliations in the history of the Catalan club.
They will no doubt be hoping to bring scintillating football back to Barcelona with Flick, but this time from their own team and not the opposition.
Barcelona has a similar philosophy to me: ball possession and attacking football.
Hansi Flick
“It is a great honor and a dream to be able to sign for this great club,” these are Flick’s first words as Barcelona coach.
“In the hours I spend here, I feel supported to succeed. Barcelona has a similar philosophy to me: possession and attacking football. I want to work hard on that.”
The German is looking forward to working with talents such as Lamin Yamal, Javi and Kuparsi.
“Barcelona has one of the best youth academies in the world. Our mission is to work together and help them grow. For me, it’s all about teamwork. I’m excited to get started.”
Flick concluded with motivation, saying: “My hunger to win the title is very great.”
“Subtly charming internet specialist. Avid writer. Friendly alcohol guru. Music ninja. Devoted social media fanatic.”
