The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, suspends its work in Rafah

However, the fact that UNRWA has suspended its activities in Rafah does not mean that it is no longer providing any assistance to the Palestinians.

An UNRWA spokesman confirmed last night that the organization’s employees had left Rafah and continued their work in Khan Yunis, “despite the damage to all our facilities.” That city was attacked by the Israeli army, after which Israel withdrew its forces in April.

According to Lazzarini, 1.7 million people currently reside in Khan Yunis and the central part of the Gaza Strip. This includes Palestinians who previously fled to Rafah and have since returned to Khan Yunis.

The UNRWA head also complains that humanitarian aid is decreasing again. “Over the past three weeks, we have received permission to collect just under 450 trucks. This is nothing compared to the existing needs: at least 600 trucks per day.”

The Israeli army confirms that it is currently continuing its operations in Rafah to fight Hamas. There is international criticism of the actions that took place in the city near the border with Egypt, partly because many people took refuge there to escape the war.
