The Popular Party (PP) became the political party with the most votes in the European elections scheduled for 9 June 2024, with 34% of the vote and 22 seats. The difference with the second most elected party, the Spanish Socialist Party, which received 30% of the vote and 20 seats, is not large. The far-right Vox party also advanced, winning 6 seats and 9.6% of the votes in Spain.
In 2024, this was the ninth time that Spain participated in the European elections. In the previous elections in 2019, the Socialist Workers’ Party was able to be the largest party by obtaining 21 seats, a year in which the Popular Party did not obtain more than 13 seats and Vox obtained 4 seats. The People’s Party gained 9 votes and now has 22 seats (in 2019: 13) in the European Parliament, which is 2 more than the PSOE 20 which lost one seat (in 2019: 21). The third largest party in Spain, but at a distance from the PP and PSOE, is Vox with 4 seats (in 2019: 4). The partnership of Ahora Repúblicas (ERC, EH-Bildu, BNG, ARA MÉS) remains the same with 3 seats, while the Somar partnership is new with 3 seats. Also new is Se Acabo la Fiesta with 3 seats, while Podemos has 4 seats (in 2019: 6) and Junts also drops by seats to 1 (in 2019: 3).
Turnout in the 2024 European elections fell by up to 11.5%, from 60.7% in 2019 to 49.2% in 2024. This equates to 17,518,192 people in Spain who cast their ballot, about 5 million fewer than the 22.6 million voters in 2019. Of those who came to the polls, 5.9 million chose the People’s Party, 5.25 million chose the Socialist Workers’ Party, and 1.67 million chose Vox.
Spain is one of the largest member states of the European Union, and has an important voice in the European Parliament. With 59 seats in 2023, Spain was the fourth country with the largest number of MEPs, after Germany, France and Italy. For the 2024 elections, two seats have been added, bringing the total to 61 MEPs.
