At In Memoriam, we regularly look back at a lost series that has left a hole in our hearts. An IP that deserved more than it got or just a series of games that left us wanting more regardless of whether they were comprehensive or not. This is a series from the heart, the broken heart.

Today we turn our attention to a series synonymous with adventure, humor and platforming action: Banjo-Kazooie. It all started in 1998, when developer Rare and publisher Nintendo released the first Banjo-Kazooie game for the Nintendo 64. This game marked the beginning of an iconic franchise that captured the hearts of gamers around the world.

Banjo-Kazooie follows the adventure of Banjo the bear and his cute bird friend Kazooie as they try to save Banjo’s sister, Tooty, from the evil witch Gruntilda. What follows is an epic adventure through colorful worlds, full of challenging puzzles, secrets and unforgettable characters.

One of the most striking features of the Banjo-Kazooie series has been the amazing variety of gameplay elements. Players can jump, fly, swim, and even transform into different forms to overcome obstacles and explore new areas. The game was full of humour, with funny dialogues between Banjo and Kazooie and fun characters like the evil Gruntilda and the clumsy Mumbo Jumbo.

Banjo Toy, released in 2000 for the Nintendo 64, served as a direct sequel to the original and brought more adventure and action to the series. The game expanded the world of Banjo-Kazooie with new areas to explore, new skills to learn, and new enemies to defeat. It also introduced a co-op mode where a second player can control Kazooie and play alongside Banjo.

After Banjo-Tooie, numerous spin-offs and expansions followed, including: Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge For Game Boy Advance and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts For Xbox 360. Although these games didn’t have the same iconic status as the original titles, they remained true to the series’ signature humor and charm.

Unfortunately, the Banjo-Kazooie series has been quiet for quite some time. Despite fan pleas and speculation about a potential sequel, developer Rare has not announced any concrete plans for new Banjo-Kazooie games. However, the franchise remains beloved by players of all ages, with a lasting impact that lives on in the memories of those who experienced the adventures of Banjo and Kazooie.
