Silly and ordinary at the same time – Graduation Offers 2024: Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Hong Kong

Artists graduating from the University of Hong Kong dare to be crazy and personal, as Stella Comer sees during her visit. She writes about the works that stood out to her most.

I visited the final examination exhibition for the Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Hong Kong on a warm Thursday, and despite the heat, the works exude a sense of calm. The group of students work with a humorous, almost childlike curiosity. This provides a fresh, uncomplicated outlook. Themes such as symbolism, space, home, and the hardships of young adult life are explored in many of the works. The students dare to be crazy, personal, and absurd. They are not afraid to be misunderstood, and they continually allow everyday events to shine through in their work.

Every year, many strong painters graduate from the University of Hong Kong, and this year too, there are several students graduating with brush and canvas. Marta Ramirez has painted a series of paintings that she considers more sculptures. The walls of the room are painted in a pattern reminiscent of tiles. Hanging on them are paintings of horses in black, green and pink. Ramirez’s work is inspired by the village in Spain where she grew up. The mural is an attempt to translate her home and childhood into a new context and thus investigate what it means to translate and convey a place. It is interesting how the paintings of horses actually function as sculptures, because the mural adds an extra layer. Ramirez knows how to add a touch to painting.
