David Goffin has not reached the first round of Wimbledon. He was two sets and 5-0 up in the fifth set but lost to Czech Tomas Macák after a stunning tiebreak. “Unlikely,” says our reporter Dirk Gerlo.

David Goffin had a golden opportunity to advance to the second round at Wimbledon as a “lucky loser”. Due to Andy Murray’s loss, he was allowed to play as a substitute against Czech Tomas Macák (ATP-39).

Matak is not known as the best player on grass, and that was evident in the first two sets yesterday. He made a lot of mistakes. Goffin started well and won the first set. He was playing solidly until the match was stopped in the evening.

With both leading 4-2 in the second set, Goffin and Maczak were allowed to continue their match today. Goffin continued his good form yesterday and took a 2-0 lead.

It’s all starting well for substitute David Goffin.

Even 5-0 in the fifth set is not enough.

But in the third set his serve started to falter a bit. He was able to hide it at first by going through Machac’s vault himself.

At 4-4, Goffin again lost his serve and then Matak made it 6-4.

In the fourth set Goffin could no longer hold his grip at all. Matak broke Goffin’s serve twice and won his service games: 6-1.

Goffin recovered in the fifth set and quickly went up 5-0. Game won? No. Matac came back and the match would be decided in a super tiebreak.
Matak was clearly stronger in this regard. The score was 10-5 to the Czechs.

Thus ends Goffin’s adventure on the holy grass in the first round. Machak will face Romanian Saviolin (ATP-44) in the next round.

“Tennis can be tough.”

“After that 5-0 in the fifth set I started making mistakes,” sighs David Goffin. “And I wasn’t serving well anymore.”

Thomas forced Machach into another great tiebreak. “It wasn’t easy, because he had confidence,” says Goffin.

“Obviously it’s disappointing. Tennis can be tough.“, he concludes.

Group 3 for Machak: 4-6

The breaks flew back and forth in the third set, but it was Matak who managed to hold serve again. Goffin made more errors, while Matak managed to raise his level a bit.

After several breaks back and forth the score became 3-3.

Set 2 also goes to Goffin 6-3

David Goffin continued yesterday’s good trend. He managed to hold both of his service games with ease.

Goffin leads Matac by two sets.
