‘I’ve lived my dream’: Red Devils international Jan Vertonghen, 37, retires

The eighth European Championship final against France was Jan Vertonghen’s last game for the Red Devils. After 157 caps, the record international announced his retirement from Belgium. “Thank you for all the memories, I lived my dream.”

It’s no surprise, but Jan Vertonghen has completed his last game for the Red Devils. The 37-year-old Anderlecht defender was almost certain to start his last tournament at Euro 2024.

In that European Championship, Vertonghen had to miss the first group match due to injury, but he took his usual place in defence again against Romania. Vertonghen showed his determination as always, but he could not save the Devils from going out in the eighth final against France on Monday.

He announced on Friday that this match would now be his last for Belgium. Vertonghen has yet to announce anything about his future with Anderlecht.

Vertonghen holds the Belgian international record with 157 caps. He is also in the top spots on the international charts with this number.
