Crash Bandicoot 5 and Project Dragon were in development but were cancelled.

Bad news for people who have been hoping for a new mainline Crash Bandicoot game for a long time. Crash Bandicoot 5 was in development, but was canceled by Activision. The previous Project Dragon was also canceled.

The rumors come from Nicholas Colley who started a thread on social media platform X about the projects he was working on. Nicholas Colley was the illustrator and character designer for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time at developer Toys For Bob.

According to the designer, there was a time when Crash Bandicoot 5 was in development at Toys For Bob, but the project was cancelled. Kole points out that Crash 5 was too ambitious and that it would break hearts when people heard the concept and vision.

Additionally, Project Dragon was canceled in the past by developer Phoenix Labs. This was supposed to be a multiplayer survival RPG. It was somewhat similar to Minecraft in terms of visual style and Zelda: Breath of the Wild in terms of the freedom it would give players. Unfortunately, this project was also canceled. Cole did not mention the reason for the cancellation of both projects.

The question is whether or not Crash Bandicoot 5 will be released. Activision is now part of Microsoft and the rights to the Crash Bandicoot franchise are now in Microsoft’s hands as well. Toys For Bob is now independent after striking a deal with Microsoft, but the next game from that studio will be published by Microsoft. This could be a game that will appear directly on Xbox Game Pass. There’s a chance that Toys For Bob has already started development on Crash Bandicoot 5 or Microsoft’s new Spyro the Dragon game.
