It’s finally over for cyclist and mountain biker Peter Sagan. The former Slovak road world champion chose the Slovak Mountain Bike Championship to ride his last honorary laps. An early end is now coming due to previous health problems.
Peter Sagan’s era is over today.
Sagan’s farewell tour has already been ongoing since 2023: last year was his farewell to the WorldTour level in road cycling, and at the end of June 2024 he competed in his last professional road race with the Tour of Slovakia.
He is now putting his professional career on hold in the Slovak Mountain Bike Championship. Today he came second in Kosice.
This will be his last UCI professional race in any discipline.
Pierre Paget’s team
“This will be his last professional UCI race in any discipline,” said Pierre Baguette. “Following the health problems he had earlier this year, Peter has decided to end his professional mountain biking career as well.”
Sagan, among other things, is a three-time world champion on the road, has won the green jersey at the Tour seven times, won the Tour of Flanders in 2016 and did the same with Paris-Roubaix in 2018.
In his final season, Sagan wanted to qualify for the Olympic mountain bike race in Paris, but was unable to do so. Earlier this year, he underwent two heart operations, meaning he was unable to complete part of his planned programme.
