Things looked just as bad for KRC Genk in their official match against French side Lille. An hour before kick-off, the gates opened and the pitch looked unplayable. The Genk residents chose to postpone the kick-off and let the greenkeepers do their job. This, combined with a good drainage system, ensured that the competition could go ahead.

Thorsten Fink praised the work of the marshals. “I also feared for a moment that we wouldn’t be able to continue the race,” says race coach Thorsten Fink. “It could have been a serious landing. But fortunately we were still able to play. I thank the marshals, they did a great job.”

The reserve players at KRC Genk did not take their usual places. Thorsten Fink chose to move the bench to the side of Tribune Zuid.
“I asked to be moved to this side myself,” he laughs. “Why? For me, it’s normal for the home team to sit on the right side, I’ve always done it that way as a coach. And now we’re closer to our fanatical supporters, which is definitely an added value.
It actually helped somewhat as KRC Genk drew 2-2 against French top flight side Lille.
