The World Health Organization said it would send a million polio vaccines to the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian health ministry declared an epidemic there last month after the polio virus was discovered in sewage.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says vaccines should be given in the coming weeks. The WHO had previously said it was difficult to administer a vaccination campaign because of the war in Gaza.
No cleanliness
According to human rights organizations, Palestinian refugees do not enjoy hygiene in many refugee camps. Sewage flows between tents. The virus has been found in that water.
The virus is spread mainly through feces, and the number of people with diarrhea is currently 24 times higher than normal, according to authorities in Gaza.
Polio is a highly contagious disease that causes paralysis. The virus is transmitted from person to person through contact with the saliva or feces of an infected person. The disease is especially dangerous for young children.
Last month, Israel decided to vaccinate its forces operating in Gaza.
