News in Brief: Massive Bird Deaths, Cool Cars, and Space Traces

There is a lot more science and technology news than KIJK can write about. So in this section we would like to point out interesting articles from other media.

In the United States, more than a billion birds die each year from flying into buildings.

People understand the concept of a window: We won’t be hitting it anytime soon, which doesn’t mean it won’t happen. But birds recognize windows less well. In 2014, scientists estimated that between 100 million and 1 billion cases were diagnosed annually in the United States alone. Birds die Because they fly to the window. But they only looked at the dead birds next to the window, although not all of them died immediately. A new research team has now studied data from rehabilitation centers where birds are sometimes taken after a collision. It showed that about 60 percent still die there. According to the researchers, this means that previous death figures are far too low and that the real number must be more than a billion.

You know how it is: after a summer vacation outing you get back in the car, but it’s in full sun and the inside looks like a sauna – no fun at all. Nissan has now come up with a solution. The Japanese automaker has developed a car paint that can significantly cool vehicles in the sun. The new paint reflects the sun’s rays more efficiently than regular paint and can absorb less heat. According to Nissan, treated cars stay up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler than untreated cars. The paint is now thicker than regular paint, is only available in white and cannot be topped with a protective layer. But the Japanese have continued their research.

First archaeological research in space

Archaeology and space travel seem like an unusual combination, but researchers have conducted the first archaeological research on the subject. International Space Station (ISS) has been implemented. They studied images of six spaces and found that astronauts do not use everything as intended. For example, they use some areas for storage, even though they are not intended for that. According to the researchers, these insights will help in the development of future space stations.
