Moroccans are complaining about the high prices of hotels, cafes and restaurants during the summer. These price increases make it impossible for many residents to enjoy their holidays in their country. They are expressing their discontent on social media and calling on the government to intervene and regulate prices.
Due to the expensive holidays in Morocco, more and more people choose to travel abroad, for example to southern Spain, where prices are lower. This has negative effects on domestic tourism, explains economist Omar Kettani. Moroccans who stay in their country often shorten their holidays due to the high costs.

According to Al-Kattani, companies in the tourism sector are trying to compensate for the losses caused by the Corona pandemic by raising prices by 60 to 70 percent. Thus, the cost of a one-night stay in a five-star hotel can reach 2,000 dirhams. The government also benefits from these price increases by increasing VAT revenues.

Bouazza Kharati, president of the Moroccan Consumers Association, pointed out that the rise in prices is the result of supply and demand. He stressed that restaurants and cafes are obligated to display their prices clearly so that consumers can make informed choices.
