“Over the past 48 hours, senior officials of our governments have held intensive discussions in Doha with the aim of reaching an agreement for a ceasefire and the release of hostages and prisoners. These discussions were serious, constructive and took place in a positive atmosphere.”
With these words, the joint statement of Egypt, Qatar and the United States begins. The second day of ceasefire negotiations concluded in the Qatari capital, Doha. The Israeli delegation is scheduled to return to its country this evening.
According to diplomats, the meeting in Doha was successful. For example, “bridges” were provided to implement the Americans’ plans for a truce as quickly and efficiently as possible. The statement also said that the various delegations will meet again next week in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. There they want to record the agreements reached in Doha.
Israel says progress has been made, but notes that some key issues have yet to be fully resolved. A Hamas official told Reuters that today’s agreement differs from what Hamas itself put on the table in July.
