Taiwan reported that 39 Chinese military aircraft flew over the island and the anti-aircraft defense system was activated. Taiwan’s armed forces broadcast several radio messages asking Chinese planes to leave the area. On Friday, Taiwan already had a record of 38 Airspace Violations mentioned. Taiwan’s Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang strongly condemned the actions. He accuses China of endangering peace in the region.
Beijing views democratic Taiwan, which broke away from the mainland in 1949, as a renegade province rather than an independent country. Communist rulers in Beijing use diplomatic, economic, and military pressure to isolate Taiwan internationally.
The United States responded on Sunday, saying it was “extremely concerned” about China’s “military provocations” near Taiwan. According to a statement from the US State Department, this is also destabilizing for the sake of peace and stability in the region. “We urge Beijing to stop its military, diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan,” US diplomatic spokesman Ned Price said.
Meanwhile, China justified the flights as “a way to test its combat and communications capabilities.”
