Netflix has fired an employee suspected of sharing classified information with the media. The employee is said to have leaked, among other things, how much the video-streaming service has paid for the controversial show of comedian Dave Chappelle. There was a lot of criticism from Netflix employees about Chappelle’s comments in his performance of The Closer, because they were offensive to transgender people.
And Bloomberg News Agency revealed, that the program’s production costs amounted to more than 19 million dollars (about 16 million euros). Thus, the American comedian’s show cost more than it produced, the documents would have come out.
Netflix says it has lost confidence in the employee who allegedly leaked the information. “We understand this employee may have been disappointed by Netflix,” the company said. “But it is essential for our company to maintain a culture of trust and transparency.”
Dissatisfaction
Transgender Netflix employees and their partners plan to protest next Wednesday against their employer’s policy of refusing to modify the show or view it offline. They are also unhappy with the way fellow CEO Ted Sarandos has responded to the controversy. He stated in his internal memoirs that he understood the dissatisfaction, but that Netflix would not modify Chappelle’s expressions as this would threaten free speech.
