Washington’s three-year term in the Council of 47 Nations begins on January 1. China and Russia are already in it. President Joe Biden said human rights played a key role in his foreign policy when he took office. His government now has the opportunity to realize this in the context of the UN.
Former President Donald Trump announced in June 2018 that the United States would withdraw from the Geneva Human Rights Council due to a lack of pro-Israel and anti-reform.
Members of the Human Rights Council shall not serve for more than two consecutive years. Candidates are selected by secret ballot in geographical groups to ensure representation. There is no competition for any seat with a geographical key.
Other countries selected on Thursday were Kazakhstan and the Gambia. Benin, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Malaysia, Paraguay, Honduras, Luxembourg, Finland, Montenegro, Lithuania.
Cameroon, Eritrea, Somalia, India and Argentina were re-elected.
Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Eritrea clashed over human rights criticism. The United States also came to the council’s attention because of racism.
