Elephant kills poacher in South African wildlife park

A spokesman for the park said the rest of the fishermen fled. They left behind the trampled man. His cell phone was rescued and handed over to the police to help track down the fishermen who escaped.

Last year, lions killed a hunter in the park. Partners of that victim called an emergency number to report him missing. The lions left only the head of the man who was found three days later.

Problem

The Kruger suffers from poaching, especially of rhinos. The zoo reported earlier this year that the rhino population has fallen 70 percent in the past decade, to less than 4,000.

Over the past two years, the park has had increasing success in tackling this crime, using new technologies and more patrols. They helped arrest suspects before the strike. Travel restrictions due to Corona have also given the park a break. The number of boiled animals has so far decreased by 37 percent compared to last year.
