More than 2,000 immigrants marched from Tapasula, Mexico, to the U.S. border with Guatemala.
According to Irino Mujica, a voluntary organization called Pueblo Cinn Franteras, the caravan is mainly made up of Central Americans, but also some Haitians and Africans. Many of them are women and children. The caravan was able to leave despite security forces from the Mexican Migration Service INM and the National Guard. The siege along the way cannot stop them for now.
Initially the caravan goes to Mexico City, but some will try to reach the United States. One leader said in the video that many are joining because they lack resources and opportunities in Mexico.
Under former US President Donald Trump, the United States introduced the ‘Stay in Mexico’ rule. As a result, asylum seekers had to stay in Mexico for the entire duration of their practice. Incumbent President Joe Biden overturned the ruling shortly after taking office, but a federal judge in Texas overturned the decision.
More than 1.7 million people were arrested last year while trying to cross the border into Mexico, the highest number since 2000, U.S. officials say. More than a million of them returned to their home countries.
