Another 138 rebels killed in fighting in Yemen | Abroad

The Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen said on Sunday it had killed 138 Houthi rebels in the past 24 hours in new attacks around Marib, the last loyalist stronghold in the war-torn north of the country.

The coalition, which has been supporting the government since 2015, claims to have inflicted heavy losses on the rebels almost daily for about a month, which did not stop them from advancing towards Marib, the capital of the oil-rich province of the same name. Coalition data cannot be independently verified and the Houthis rarely reveal their losses.

Marib is the last stronghold of the Yemeni government in the north of the country. Heavy fighting has been raging around the city since February and the fighting intensified last week due to a rebel offensive.

The Houthis, allegedly backed by Iran, have been fighting government forces in Yemen for seven years. In 2014, they occupied most of the north of the country, including the capital, Sanaa. Since 2015, an international coalition led by Saudi Arabia has intervened in the conflict to support the government.
