The first death after a volcanic eruption was found…

A volcanic eruption on the Canary island of La Palma claimed the first life.

On the island of La Palma, a 70-year-old man died in his home in the village of Las Manchas located on the border between the municipalities of Los Llanos de Arridan and El Paso. Police believe he was killed when the roof of his house collapsed.

The man had obtained permission from the authorities to enter the house. It happens with some regularity that evacuees are allowed to enter the ash-covered area to collect papers or other supplies. Usually the supervisor is involved. The victim, who was found on Saturday after his family reported him missing on Friday, is believed to have been removing volcanic ash from his home when the roof collapsed.

The volcano erupted on September 19. According to the latest data, the glowing lava, whose temperature reached about 1,300 degrees, completely destroyed more than 1,450 properties. In all, more than a thousand hectares are covered with a layer of lava meters thick, and more than 7,000 people have had to seek shelter since the eruption of the volcano. In recent days there has been little movement in the lava flow.
