Manchester United have already realized after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that the search for a desirable successor will not be an obvious task.
Most goals still under contract – PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino tops the wish list – and United want to end the season with a temporary national team referee.
This is not the assistant of Michael Carrick, who won 0-2 with United last week in the Champions League against Villarreal in Spain and yesterday’s 1-1 draw against leaders Chelsea in London.
United lays its eggs in the basket of Ralf Rangnick, the 63-year-old German snatched from Lokomotiv Moscow as ‘Head of Sports and Development’.
Rangnick was a coach at Hannover, Schalke 04, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, among others. He is somewhat described as the “Godfather” of contemporary German trainers.
As sporting director, he also helped build the RB empire, with successes in Salzburg and Leipzig.
Rangnick’s first assignment is usually the first home game against Arsenal on Thursday. Then his work visa must be arranged in time, and until then Carrick is the ‘caretaker’. With his contract until June, the German will play the role of chancellor on the United Executive Committee.
“I am looking forward to coming to Manchester United,” said Rangnick. “I want to make it a successful season with the club. This is a selection full of talent with a good balance of youth and experience. All my efforts are being put into realizing the potential.”
