Any new Russian aggression against Ukraine would provoke a serious response. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken issued the warning on Tuesday on the sidelines of a NATO ministerial meeting in the Latvian capital of Riga.
“Any escalation by Russia would be a source of great concern for both the United States and Latvia, and any further aggression would have serious consequences,” he said at a news conference with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevix.
Blinken declined to say what such a response would entail, saying he would first consult with US and NATO allies in Riga on Tuesday and Wednesday. “We are very concerned about the movements that we are seeing,” he said of Russian forces on the Ukrainian border.
Belarus
The US diplomatic official also warned again that Washington was working with the European Union on new sanctions against Belarus. That country has been accused of using migrants “cynically” as “weapons” to destabilize its European neighbours.
