US authorities are investigating the death of a teenage boy who was trapped in a well on a North Carolina beach. This was reported by the Reuters news agency.

The 17-year-old boy from Chesapeake died last Saturday in Frisco, a small beach town in the Hatteras Island region. He was stuck in a hole several meters deep that he had dug himself. The boy died after being buried under a mound of sand.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene after an emergency report. They freed the boy from the hole, but all help came too late. “We ask that visitors not dig deep wells on the beach for the safety of beachgoers,” said Mike Barber, a national park spokesman. The family of the deceased boy was devastated.

This is not the first time a victim has been buried under sand in the United States. In late March, a 14-year-old boy died after falling into a well in Minnesota. This past May, a 13-year-old boy from Utah died after trying to tunnel into the sand dunes of Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.
