A forever mystery due to no bike computer: Demolition and loss of Strava-KOM by Tadej Pogacar on Oude Kwaremont | Van der Poel wins the Tour of Flanders

CyclingDo not search for Strava Tadej Pogacar numbers. Due to a fall at the start of the Tour of Flanders, the Slovenian rode an entire race without a bike computer. So there is no KOM (King of the Mountain) on Oude Kwaremont. It was bike photographer and former racer Leon van Bonn who next stumbled upon the Slovenian data tracker.

How impressive he was in the second round on Oude Kwaremont. He passed Tadej Pogakar from one rider to the next and secured an impressive show of strength. The result was a rare rise for the hangman on the Tour of Flanders. But did that lead to record time?

We’re guessing in the absence of Strava data at Pogacar, but it’s clear that the climb has been faster than ever. Kasper Asgreen, who bit off a Pogacar wheel and blew his legs off, rode Oude Kwaremont’s fastest climb ever on a Strava.

The Dane achieved 4:33 in the 2.5 kilometer climb, clocking 33.1 kilometers per hour and doing 17 seconds better than the previous best time. She was by the name of Philip Gilbert for five years. Pogacar probably did a little better than Asgreen and had 18 or 19 seconds better than Gilbert in 2017.

Matthew van der Poel had a point when he stated after his victory that under Pogacar’s impulse, people didn’t drive Oude Kwaremont so fast. Although it must certainly be noted that the conditions were favourable. There was a breeze – not a storm – a tailwind.

In addition, Pogacar and Asgreen also had fixed targets to drive towards throughout the climb. Finally, given the Pogacar’s speed, other riders like Van der Poel, Küng, Pidcock, Garcia Cortina, Wright and Tratnik rode faster than Philip Gilbert’s 4:50 ride in 2017.

We can infer from Van der Poel’s Strava profile that the Dutchman achieved an average power of 503 Watts over a period of 4 minutes 37 seconds in order to stay fairly close to Asgreen and Pogacar.

“The plan to attack Oude Kwaremont came after the reconnaissance,” Pogacar said after the race about his impressive raid. “I love this slope and there was an incredible atmosphere through the crowd. I will definitely be back.”

Van der Poel and his colleagues know what to expect from this.
