In the Norwegian town of Steinkjer, north of Trondheim, a man drove his car into several pedestrians. Police said a man in his 20s died of his injuries in hospital. Two others were slightly injured.
The suspect is a man between thirty and forty years old. NRK reported that he drove his car last night on the sidewalk. The man was said to have been under the influence of alcohol. It is not yet clear whether the accident was an accident or if he deliberately hit the two pedestrians.
Norwegian Justice Minister Emily Inger Mehl described the incident as “tragic” and expressed condolences to those affected.
Police initially assumed foul play, but the suspect’s lawyer, who was arrested shortly after the crime, said her client did not have sufficient awareness of what had happened and should be investigated before the scheduled interrogation time. The man was previously known to the police.
Police confirmed Sunday morning that he was too drunk to be questioned at this time. Due to the unclear nature of the crime, special security measures have been temporarily announced across the country.
