In the Austrian region of Tyrol, the top of a mountain has disappeared in a large mountain avalanche. “A hundred meters has been cut from the summit,” said the leader of Galtür’s local mountain rescue team, Christian Walter.

On the Fluchthorn massif, large blocks of stones broke off and fell on Sunday. The event witnessed a group of mountain rescuers who were completing a training course in the area on Sunday. The block of stones walked in front of a mountain hut, according to eyewitnesses of the “Kronen Zeitung” newspaper.

Police hovered over the area near the Swiss border. The avalanche was about 2 km long, but there are no indications that the south summit collapse of the Fluchthorn River caused any casualties.

According to Walter, the mountains have been “more mobile” lately. Due to climate change, glaciers and permafrost are melting. Walter emphasized that he wanted to leave the evaluation of the mountain sediments at Fluchthorn to geologists.
