According to experts, a rare 1957 BMW 507 will fetch several million at auction. The agile sports car remained untouched in a Philadelphia garage for 43 years.

It’s not uncommon to see vintage Ferraris and Bentleys fetching over €1 million during auctions, but it’s different for BMWs. Unlike sister brand Mercedes, for example, BMW hasn’t built many special or rare cars in the past. In any case, there are no cars that can bring in several million.

Only 252 copies were built

In fact, only the BMW 507 has this status. Not surprisingly, BMW built only 252 of the 507 between 1956 and 1960, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after cars. The list of 507 private owners includes Elvis Presley and former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.

The early Series 1 units are the rarest, with only 34 units built in the first two years of production. The car now discovered in the United States is one of the second series that appeared on the market in 1957. This model has a smaller fuel tank and more trunk space than its predecessor, as the large tank of the first series limited cargo space and produced strong fuel fumes.

The rare BMW 507 was once bought new in Caracas

This BMW 507 was auctioned brand new in Caracas, Venezuela. The current owner’s father bought the car in the late 1970s, but never drove it. Instead, he put the car in a Philadelphia garage, where the car remained in storage for 43 years. An interesting detail is that the car is only one of 507 cars owned by the same family. Apparently, there were even more family members who actually thought the 507 was a nice car when prices weren’t that high yet.

Under the hood of the 507 is a 3.2-liter V8 that produces 150 horsepower. A four-speed manual ZF gearbox was standard and the car accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h from a standstill in just over 11 seconds. Bonhams estimates the car will fetch between $1.8 million and $2.2 million. The car will be auctioned off in September in the US at Audrain Concours in Rhode Island.
