The supply report received by the federal government contains a clear warning that natural gas supplies could be threatened as early as this winter. This is reported by “De Tijd” and “L’Echo”, who manage to see a secret passage.
The management warns that in the event of a cold snap or severe winter, Belgium’s natural gas supply could really become a problem this winter. If the mercury falls below zero, “a shortage may arise in a market where supply is less than demand.”
When it gets cold in Western Europe, the UK in particular needs all the available gas itself. Then the show will stop for Belgium.
However, the government has repeatedly emphasized that gas and electricity supplies will not be compromised this winter and next. Therefore, senior ministers question the credibility of the administration’s analysis. It seems that there will be errors in the report.
Management will also have an insufficient view of the contracts that gas suppliers have in place here and elsewhere in Europe, which is critical to knowing where the gas will eventually flow. Only real supply problems are expected in the Elfstedentocht scenario, with prolonged temperatures of -11 degrees.
“It’s good that the administration takes extreme positions into account, but the security of supply is guaranteed,” Energy Minister Tini van der Straeten (Gruene) says.
