A sailor killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor is buried more than 80 years after his death | Abroad

More than 80 years after his death, the remains of a sailor killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor are interred today at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, USA. A cemetery spokesperson reported this.

Herbert Jacobson, “Burt” to his family, was 21 when he was killed in a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the largest US military base in the Pacific. Attempts to identify his body failed several times. The last attempt in 2015 was successful, thanks in part to scientific advances. However, his body was not officially identified until 2019. Due to the Corona pandemic, the funeral was not held immediately after its identification.

Since 2003, 361 personnel have been identified from the remains of the battleship USS Oklahoma, according to the US Defense Agency, which is responsible for identifying the bodies of soldiers who have been prisoners of war or missing since World War II.

More than 400 people aboard the USS Oklahoma were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The warship was refloated two years later and the bodies were recovered and buried in Hawaii.
