Will we soon have traffic lights that have a fourth white light in addition to the red, orange and green? Researchers at North Carolina State University favor this idea. but why?
Researchers believe that A Fourth, white light Traffic can flow more smoothly in places where there are more self-driving cars on the road. If the traffic light is white, the ‘normal’ car can follow the autonomous vehicle in front of it. Without worrying about accidents.
10% less traffic jams
Autonomous cars are much better at estimating traffic and communicating with other autonomous vehicles. Are there a few self-driving cars at the intersection? Then the traffic light will continue to operate as usual. But if there are multiple self-driving cars, they know where they are from each other, and the car can still safely follow in their wake.
If only 10 percent of the cars on the track were driving themselves, you’d get less than three percent of the traffic jams that way. If one in three cars were self-driving, traffic jams would be reduced by ten percent. This is evidenced by the simulations conducted by the researchers. They themselves point out that it is difficult to replace all traffic lights: over a hundred years ago traffic lights were given an additional colour, from 1920 when orange was added.
