The game was played between the University of Nebraska and Omaha at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. This field is usually reserved for American football, but has been transformed into a volleyball temple for the occasion.
Volleyball is very popular in Nebraska, a state with a population of just under 2 million people. The University of Nebraska has played more than 300 consecutive games in front of fully packed crowds, and no other American team performs better in terms of attendance.
It is no coincidence that Nebraska Volleyball Day, an event to promote the sport, drew crowds to Memorial Stadium. It was recorded at 92,003 spectators. This is a record for a women’s sports competition.
The previous record wasn’t long in the books. In April 2022, 91,648 football fans came to Camp Nou for the UEFA Women’s Champions League match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg. Barcelona has now lost that record.
For John Cook, the coach who has led Nebraska to four NCAA titles in volleyball, it was an emotional moment. “I cried about 5 times today. No one would have dreamed of this when we came up with the idea of breaking this record. This is really amazing,” Cook said.
