MovieThe age rating for the family movie “Pietje Bell” has been revised to “9 years and over” following complaints. So the movie can be broadcast as planned by KRO-NCRV on New Year’s Eve (Saturday) on NPO Zapp. The Netherlands Institute for Audiovisual Media Classification (NICAM), which monitors the age rating of films and series in the Netherlands, announced a revised age rating on Wednesday.
Earlier, the 2002 film’s rating appeared to have been changed from “all ages” to “12 and over”, after Kijkwijzer received several complaints that some scenes in the film made children restless. Pietje Bell’s film, about a Rotterdam street urchin who goes on adventures, has the same rating as modern action films like No Time To Die or Spider-Man.
This increased age rating has subsequently led to criticism. But on Wednesday, NICAM reported that it would be revised downwards again, to “9 years and over.”

Producer Dave Schramm is relieved to adjust the age rating. “Of course I’m glad the movie is back on television,” said Schramm. “That’s all there is to it in the end.” Although the producer is happy that the film can now stream as normal, he is unhappy with how it all turned out. “I can’t imagine that this is normal practice.”
KRO-NCRV is also pleased that the film is now showing as planned on New Year’s Eve. “We wish the children and parents a lot of fun watching this coming Saturday morning,” the broadcaster said.
