After two-year ‘relegation’, Novak Djokovic hits back in US: ‘It’s good to be back here’ | Tennis

With videoNovak Djokovic beat Spaniard Alejandro Davidovic Fogina to return to singles action on American soil. The 36-year-old Serbian took the first set (6-4) at the Cincinnati Masters, after which the world number 23 had to drop. Djokovic had already lost a doubles match in Ohio on Tuesday.

It’s still unconvincing for the world No.2. Djokovic gave away several break points early on, and even after Davydovic Fogina was injured, he made some easy errors. The Spaniard treated Djokovic for the first time at 4-3 due to a back injury. In the first game of the second set, he suffered an injury and gave up.

Djokovic later spoke of mixed feelings. “It’s nice to come back to America after two years and win a game, but it’s definitely funny how it ended.” The 23-time Grand Slam winner has not played since losing in the Wimbledon final against Carlos Algarz last month. “Hopefully I can grow here in the competition.”

Djokovic played his last match on American soil two years ago during the US Open final. After that, he was not allowed to enter the country because he was not vaccinated against Corona. The Serbian is now gearing up for the US Open, which starts on August 28.
